More About The Tree

I found the article about The Princess Tree but am not sure 100% convinced this is it. In any case, the princess tree is from China and has amazing qualities. Apparently the timber from it earns the same market value as NZ pine but at a far lower production cost. Anyone interested in starting a tree farm with me? (n.b. I'll provide the princesses, you provide the venture capital). Posted by Picasa

Thanks for introducing yourself Lindsay. Your photos and descriptions of the south island are wonderful. We have just been in NZ a few months ourselves so have yet to explore that part of our new country. It looks far more similar to Canada than the region we are residing in.

I am also looking forward to exploring the rest of your blog. It will be interesting to peruse the writings from enlarged frontal lobes. I have been operating for years on just one or two neurons myself.

As for our mountain climbers, one wants to scale every face of the mountain on her own steam. The other would prefer to be lifted in by helicoptor and left to enjoy the view, preferably while soaking in a spa tub and eating chocolate.

Kathleen - I would suggest that the tree is a Jacaranda. Fern-like leaves with clusters of lavender-blue flowers? Glad you're enjoying your time in New Zealand. To save me looking up the map, which Island are living in?

Oh, silly me - you have been mentioning Whangarei, so obviously you are in the north of the North Island.

Thanks Alice,
It must be a Jacaranda. I'll look up more about it.

Yes, we are in Northland, just south of Whangarei.

We hear that the south island has more spectacular scenery but I think that area looks alot like where we came from in Canada. The North seems very exotic to us with the sandy beaches and citrus trees.

We went to NZ for our honeymoon 38 years ago. There was great rivalry between to the two islands as to which was the better. We found the South very spectacular, but felt that if we lived in NZ then we would choose the North. I know that we went to Whangarei but I don't remember much about it. We had 17 days in the North (driving ourselves) and 11 days in the South (mostly on a bus tour). We spent a week at the Chateau in the Tongariro National Park, south of Taupo. Beautiful country and lovely people.

Hi Alice,

We'll add Tongariro to our list of places to explore. Sounds like a fabulous honeymoon. Ours was only two nights but still very memorable.

From what I've heard about Whangarei, it is only recently that they have really made an effort to make it attractive to tourists. I suspect when you saw it, it was entirely unremarkable. As it is now,it still is lacking in overall beauty and character. The more I travel the more I appreciate good urban planning.
